Saturday is market day in Gourdon, our local town which is just 10 minutes drive from us.

It was bright and sunny and it’s a holiday weekend here in France, as well as the UK, so the market was busy and bustling.

Wonderful sweet and luscious Gariguette strawberries were everywhere and the fish stall was groaning with goodies.

This old boy couldn’t wait to get home for his oysters – he was enjoying them there and then! Good on him – the most nutritious food on the planet!

We bought a dozen to indulge in later…

Our cyclists feasted on fresh, steaming mussels in a leek, cider and crème fraiche sauce:

Lovely piece of belly pork, scalded and air-drying ready for roasting. The meat is supplied by our local butcher and is raised just a few kilometres away. The resulting crackling was superb!:

Dessert was toasted hazelnut meringue layers filled with dark chocolate and mascarpone, a coffee syrup (really simple to make and divine), topped off with (home-made) vanilla ice cream – scrumptious!

Ice cream fest

Ice cream fiend Richard is arriving soon for a couple of weeks visit so I thought I’d better get prepared – as well as use up some of our fresh egg glut (we can only manage so many omlettes!)

So 15 egg yolks and 1.5 litres of double cream later… et voila!

From left to right: Espresso, Irish whiskey and speculoos biscuits; sea salted caramel chocolate;  white chocolate and raspberry meringue.

Will have to try hard not to eat them all (John!) before he arrives!

Next on the menu – a gigantic Pavlova with the 15 whites!!

Ripe tomatoes = great gazpacho

Our tomatoes are coming thick and fast now in all shapes and sizes. The cherry ones are particularly sweet and delicious – in fact we are eating them like sweeties!
Incredibly hot sunny day again yesterday – so what better than a gorgeous, chilled bowl of gazpacho as a starter for our 9 cycling guests’ dinner last night. It was followed by a huge seafood Paella and then Crema Catalana to continue the Spanish theme.
